Home Care Guidance

Practical routines and habits that protect your skin barrier between clinic visits.

Emollient Therapy

Moisturising is not optional — it is the cornerstone of eczema management. Apply a generous layer of emollient at least twice daily and always within three minutes of bathing, while skin is still damp.

Bathing & Showering

Hot water strips natural oils. Use lukewarm water and limit baths or showers to ten minutes. Pat skin dry gently — never rub with a rough towel.

The soak-and-seal method: soak in plain water for ten minutes, pat dry, apply medicated cream if prescribed, then immediately cover with a thick emollient layer.

Trigger Awareness

Common Triggers

  • Wool, synthetic fabrics, and tight clothing
  • Fragranced laundry detergent and fabric softener
  • Sudden temperature changes and low humidity
  • Stress and poor sleep

Helpful Habits

  • Cotton or bamboo clothing in soft layers
  • Hypoallergenic bedding washed at 60°C
  • Humidifier in bedroom during dry months
  • Keep nails short to reduce damage from scratching

Scratching & Itch Management

Itch often worsens at night. Cool compresses, distraction techniques, and sedating antihistamines (when recommended by your physician) can help. For children, cotton gloves at bedtime protect skin from unconscious scratching.
